Blog 9 : Shadow

Objects are expressed by light and through this process, we can see and realize them. Besides, on the other side of the objects we see, there is a shadow. We used to forget the existence of shadows. I think shadow is always likely to playing a supporting role with the help of the light. The image of shadow usually seems to be not friendly or represents dark-side that makes us feel more mystical and curious in the movie.
Today, in the morning, I took a picture that was the shadow of my daughter and me. It shows that moment of our happiness. Sometimes, the shadow of darkness makes us much thoughtful because that dark without detail features implies imagination what the shadow's an opposite light-side would be. If I see this picture later again, I would not be able to remember how my daughter and I was making a look. However, I am certainly sure that this shadow picture would remind me of the happy moment, without seeing the face itself. With only the shape of shadow, great happiness could be expressed.

Film (Artist " Artemisia.1997 ")

Until I watch this movie, I didn't know the fact that Artemisia was a female. Actually I didn't have any basic information about this artist at all. That is the main reason why I chose this film. I didn't want to select a well-known artist, but instead I would like to learn about a novelty of new figures. A background of the movie was the middle of ages. At that time, the realm of art was opened only for men and that women are not allowed to learn painting in public had a negative effect on her artistic activities and improving her talent of drawing. In fact, Artemisia was not well-known in her times but she was shed new light afterwards by the feminist movements. This film showed how much social pressure made her existence disappear in the history. Her father was also a famous painter of the time so that it had influenced on her to do art activities continuously. In the movie, she had met with her mentor by her father's introduction. At first, he was not willing to accept her as his student. However, he finally started to teach her very useful skills and Artemisia enjoyed learning from him. The mentor was so passionate to teach her and both of them fell in love and got a deep relationship. Even though he wasn't a desirable man morally, she loved him. One day, when her father realized that his daughter was in love with the teacher, she was not allowed to see him any longer and their relationship was over.
I recommend this movie for someone who wants to watch the life of the ancient Baroque era artists because the film shows a lots of ancient art techniques that will make you full of curiosity.

Reflection AIC Class Visit

My visiting AIC was something different from other times because I could change my viewpoint about the art while I am taking the art class. Therefore, I had a more impressive time through the visiting this time, even though I have visited there several times before. Above all, I had considered what AIC means to Chicago people. Maybe I could be their pride and a haven of peace. Since it is located in the heart of downtown, people would be able to find peace of mind during a busy days. If you have seen some famous artworks in art books, you can see those works in AIC. It could be very exhilarating experience for you. So, the great artworks are sure to enhance the museum more valuable. I recommend this place to you if you would like to get peace of mind. Especially, Van Gogh's "the bedroom" will help you feel comfortable and calm. Try to stop by here before you go back to work.

Reflection of the AIC website

While I was exploring the Art Institute of Chicago website, I felt that even though I thought it is time wasting at first but it was very rewarding and worthy at the end. Actually, I have been to this museum with my wife when she was pregnant in Feb. At that time, I just looked around and took pictures in front of famous artworks together. That was all. It was not informative or helpful. Just I enjoyed seeing well-know artworks. However, looking around through website was very good because I could get some information about the work such as artist history, explanation. Furthermore, I could create my own collection with artworks I like and also share my collection with friends. Lastly, I didn’t have to pay the expensive admission fee for enjoy the artworks. Whenever I have time, I may visit this website and I will try to refresh my mind with new artworks.

Reflection about Industry of the ordinary

As soon as I entered the cultural center, what I asked myself was “what doesn’t it mean “Ordinary”?” It was hard for me to understand the meaning of “the industry of the ordinary” itself either. They were all confusing and I didn’t know why they are related to ordinary things. I thought that the artists just tried to create ordinary objects in twisted ways to be shown as great art works to draw people’s attention. However, what I was impressed from their works that people see ordinary things with a different viewpoint. Also, I learned that ordinary things that we don’t entitle any special meaning could be a good material or motivation to be a great artwork.

Reflection of Public Art

The public art tour gave me a chance to rebuild my stereotype about public arts which usually are open to the public, displayed on the street. As a matter of fact, I haven't paid any attention to those public arts before I take this class. While I was doing this assignment, I felt like I was finding hidden treasures in the city. Even though I tried to do the audio tour at first, it wasn't suitable for me because I felt it is kind of boring and the explanation about the artwork was too long. Therefore, I just stop doing the audio tour and started mapping to get the location of the artworks in Chicago. I planned my own tour for not only the artworks which Chicago city recommends, but also other not-well known works which usually don't draw many people's attention. Since I knew that I might not be able to finish this project in a day, I carried my camera all the time in order to take picture of them whenever I find them. What I learned from this work is that I lived,am still living, will live with art, although I have never thought about the art before and the art is the things which is not related to me. Actually, when I found all the artworks at first glance, my impression about them was they are so hard that I couldn't understand them at all. However, while I was looking up the information about them, it brought me pleasure to get to know about them. I was glad to understand the artwork more deeply as per the artists' intention.
